eSIM ID verification: why do some sellers ask for your passport?

Identity verification depends on the seller and profile. We separate the checkout step, documents requested and destination evidence; unknown requirements remain unknown.

Quick answer

Why do some eSIM sellers ask for ID verification?

Some eSIM profiles require electronic identity verification before purchase. Airalo’s help article, checked 15 October 2026, describes a passport document, sometimes an address, and third-party verification. UnlistedSIM offers an eSIM without ID or email from $1.09 at checkout. Destination and profile requirements are separate; an unconfirmed roaming rule is not a documented exemption.

What does eKYC mean for an eSIM?

eKYCElectronic identity verification before purchase or activation
Possible documentsA passport or other accepted identity document; address, selfie or liveness check depend on the process
Airalo verifierThird-party providers may vary with the eSIM location; its current help article names no single provider
Airalo country listNot provided in the help article checked 2026-10-15
UnlistedSIM checkoutNo ID document, selfie, phone number or email required
Upstream requirementIf a local network ever required an ID check for a destination, that plan page would say so before you pay

Why does Airalo ask me to verify my identity?

Airalo’s help article says that certain local SIM or eSIM purchases require electronic identity verification. The purchase is held until verification succeeds. It describes uploading a document such as a passport and, where required, entering an address. Different third-party providers may handle verification depending on the eSIM location.

We checked the full article on 15 October 2026. It provides no destination list and names no single verifier. Earlier references based on a search snippet are not used here.

Which countries require eSIM identity verification?

The exact product matters. Turkcell’s tourist offer in Türkiye requires a passport for its local SIM or eSIM. Hong Kong’s OFCA describes registration for locally issued SIMs, with foreign roaming addressed separately in legislative records. These are source-specific findings, not a worldwide answer.

The country registry separates local registration, travel-profile checks, roaming and phone registration. Where a source does not address a category, its status stays unknown. Silence about roaming is not an exemption.

What does an ID check collect, and who processes it?

Airalo describes an identity document, an address where required, and referral to a third-party verifier. Other processes can request more: Turkcell documents passport scanning, NFC, a liveness check and video acceptance for app activation of its local tourist eSIM.

The verification provider, seller and issuing operator may have different processing roles. Read their current privacy notices to establish who receives documents and for how long. We have not audited their systems or retention periods.

Is eKYC the same thing as SIM registration?

No. eKYC describes a verification method. SIM registration describes a rule or operator process connecting a local subscription with a registered holder. A provider may also request documents under its own policy. Being digital does not itself determine whether a check applies.

An IMEI rule concerns the device. A phone-tax or IMEI exemption is not evidence of an exemption from subscriber registration. The source scope matters more than the label used in an eSIM advertisement.

How does UnlistedSIM work without an ID form?

A random account number is created for login. You top up a prepaid balance in crypto from $10 and buy a data eSIM, with plans from $1.09. The QR and activation code appear in the account when ready. No passport, selfie, email or phone number is needed at our checkout.

If a local network ever required an ID check for a destination, that plan page would say so before you pay. Data that remains is listed on what we collect. The network still sees device and subscription identifiers and cell location: who sees what.

What should I check before sharing an identity document?

Can I buy an eSIM without ID verification?

Yes at UnlistedSIM checkout: no document, selfie or email is requested. Plans start at $1.09. If a local network ever required an ID check for a destination, that plan page would say so before you pay. Check the exact destination and profile separately in the country registry.

Does Airalo use Jumio for every eSIM?

Its help article does not say that. As checked on 15 October 2026, it says third-party verification providers can vary by the eSIM location. We do not infer a single named provider from an older search snippet.

Does Saily require KYC?

This page does not establish Saily’s current requirements. Check the exact plan and checkout, and read the seller’s own privacy notice. The seller comparison marks verified statements and unknowns separately.

Will my ID be kept after verification?

That depends on the seller, verification provider and operator. We have not audited their retention periods. Read their privacy notices before uploading. UnlistedSIM requests no identity document at checkout, so it has no checkout ID document to retain.

Does buying without ID hide my phone from networks?

No. Networks still see device and subscription identifiers and approximate cell location. A no-ID checkout changes what the seller requests; it does not hide the radio connection or provide an end-to-end VPN.
