eSIM in China: do Google and WhatsApp work?

Whether Google and WhatsApp work on a travel eSIM in mainland China depends on where its traffic exits. We have not tested our own China plans yet, so we make no prediction for them. Here is the mechanism, what eSIM sellers report, and what to do before you fly.

Quick answer

Do Google and WhatsApp work on an eSIM in China?

Not tested on UnlistedSIM plans yet, so we cannot tell you. It depends on where the eSIM's traffic exits: outside mainland China (home routing), Google and WhatsApp are usually reachable, according to the travel site China Guidelines; through Chinese networks, they may be blocked. We have not published the routing of our China plans. Install the eSIM before you enter China. Our China plans start at $2.09, with no ID at checkout, paid in crypto.

Do Google and WhatsApp work with a travel eSIM in China?

It depends on where the eSIM's traffic exits. According to the travel site China Guidelines (14 June 2026), Google and WhatsApp usually work when a travel eSIM's traffic leaves mainland China before it reaches the internet, and usually do not on a local Chinese SIM. That difference comes from routing.

With a local SIM, your traffic goes through the domestic network, where Google, YouTube, WhatsApp and Instagram "usually cannot be accessed directly", according to the same source. It adds that a travel eSIM that reaches the global internet directly usually needs no VPN, with a warning: if your traffic is routed through local Chinese networks, it may still be blocked.

The technical reason is home routing, the usual setup in roaming. The IP address comes from the home network of the eSIM, and all traffic is sent back to that network before it reaches the internet (IETF). If the home network is outside mainland China, the traffic reaches the internet from there. If the profile uses local breakout instead, the traffic leaves from the Chinese network you are connected to, and local filtering applies. This describes the mechanism, not our plans: we have not tested them.

Why do eSIM sellers report different results?

Because each seller's China profile can be routed differently, and their claims are not independent tests:

  • Jetpac, an eSIM seller, writes that its China eSIM keeps Google blocked while WhatsApp works.
  • KnowRoaming, an eSIM seller, says Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Gmail, Maps and YouTube work on its China eSIM.

These are commercial statements read on 9 October 2026 as search snippets. Two sellers, two different results: the brand of the eSIM does not decide access, its routing does. Ask any seller where its China traffic exits before you rely on it.

Have we tested UnlistedSIM's China plans?

No, not yet. We have not tested Google, Gmail, Maps, WhatsApp or other services on our China plans from inside mainland China, and we do not publish the country where their traffic exits yet. So we cannot tell you that Google or WhatsApp will work on them, and we do not.

We do not know yet whether our China plans use home routing or local breakout, so we make no prediction. Until a dated test of our China plans is published on the exit-IP registry, do not count on Google or WhatsApp, and keep an offline copy of what you need: maps, tickets, addresses.

Can you install a foreign eSIM once you are in China?

No, so install it before you leave. Apple writes that "eSIMs from non-China mainland carriers can't be installed while located in China mainland" (article 123879, published 9 September 2026). Apple wrote this in a page about iPhones bought in China; we read it as a general rule for travellers, because the risk is the same and the cost of being wrong is high.

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, check that it appears in your settings, and turn the line on when you land. Do not delete the profile during the trip: a deleted profile may not install again, and you could not reinstall it from inside mainland China anyway. We have not verified whether our website loads from mainland China, so do not plan to buy or top up from there.

Does an iPhone bought in China support eSIM?

Only a few recent models do. Apple lists eSIM support on these iPhones sold in mainland China: iPhone 18 Pro (A3715), iPhone 18 Pro Max (A3718), iPhone Duo (A3721), iPhone 17e (A3635) and iPhone Air (A3518). They hold at most 2 eSIMs, and a travel eSIM can be activated outside China with location services turned on (Apple, article 123879).

Other iPhones sold in mainland China have two nano-SIM trays and no eSIM (Apple, article 118669). Some models sold in Hong Kong and Macao also use two nano-SIM cards. For Samsung, third-party sources report that devices from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao have no eSIM; Samsung itself says eSIM may not be supported depending on the country of origin. Dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, the phone supports eSIM. More: devices.

Is Hong Kong different from mainland China?

Yes. Hong Kong has its own mobile operators (CMHK, csl, 3 and SmarTone) and its own SIM law. The real-name registration regulation for SIM cards took effect on 1 September 2021, and it does not cover SIM cards issued and activated outside Hong Kong, according to the government consultation paper. A trip to both places can need two kinds of planning: see eSIM for Hong Kong and eSIM for China.

We make no claim on this. One secondary source mentions a ministry rule that restricts VPN use, and we could not verify it. We found no official Chinese source that deals with travel eSIMs in roaming. Local laws apply to you in China, whatever SIM you use. This page explains how routing works; it does not tell you how to avoid any rule, and we do not describe our plans as a way around the firewall.

What does UnlistedSIM ask, and what does the Chinese network see?

We ask for no ID document, no selfie and no email. A random account number is your login, and you pay in crypto (BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC; we don't accept Monero). By contrast, a local SIM in China requires a passport and real-name registration, and new SIM cards have required a face scan since December 2019; how that applies to foreign passports is not documented.

A private checkout does not hide subscription identifiers, the device or its location from mobile networks. Our China plans connect to China Mobile, as a roaming visitor. Like any mobile network, it sees your device identifier (IMEI) and your approximate location. Connecting to China Mobile does not by itself mean that your traffic exits in China: that depends on the routing (home routing or local breakout), which we have not published or tested. An eSIM does not itself provide a VPN tunnel. See who sees what.

What should you do before you fly to China?

Prepare at home, because some things cannot be fixed on arrival:

  1. Check your phone. It must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Dial *#06# and look for an EID.
  2. Buy and install the eSIM on Wi-Fi before you leave. A foreign eSIM cannot be installed inside mainland China, according to Apple.
  3. Keep your home SIM active for bank codes by SMS: our eSIM is data only and has no +86 number.
  4. Download offline maps and save your tickets and addresses, in case a service you rely on is not reachable.
  5. Turn the eSIM line on when you land, and allow data roaming for it.
  6. Do not delete the profile during the trip.

Our China plans start at $2.09; the lowest price per GB is $1.08/GB. An eSIM that was never installed is credited back to your balance; an installed eSIM is not refunded.

Questions about eSIMs in China

Do I need a VPN with a travel eSIM in China?

It depends on where the eSIM's traffic exits, and we have not tested our China plans yet. A travel site reports that a travel eSIM reaching the global internet directly usually needs no VPN; one eSIM seller reports Google blocked on its own China eSIM. We make no claim on VPN legality in China: local laws apply.

Does WhatsApp work in China with an UnlistedSIM eSIM?

Not tested yet, so we make no prediction. Access depends on where the eSIM's traffic exits, and we do not publish the exit country of our China plans yet. One eSIM seller reports WhatsApp working while Google stays blocked on its own China profile. Check the exit-IP registry for a dated test before you rely on it.

Does Google work in China with an eSIM?

It depends on the routing of the profile. Google is usually not reachable on a local Chinese SIM, and usually reachable when roaming traffic exits outside mainland China, according to China Guidelines. Sellers disagree: one says Google works on its China eSIM, another says Google stays blocked on its own. Our plans have not been tested in China yet, so we make no prediction for them.

Can I install an eSIM after I arrive in China?

No. Apple says eSIMs from non-China mainland carriers can't be installed while you are located in mainland China. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi before you leave, then turn the line on when you land. We have also not verified whether our website loads from mainland China.

Do I need a passport to buy a China eSIM from UnlistedSIM?

No. We ask for no passport, no ID document, no selfie and no email. You top up a balance in crypto from $10 and buy the eSIM from it. A local Chinese SIM is different: it needs a passport and real-name registration. Travel eSIMs usually work in roaming on a foreign subscription instead.

Will I get a Chinese phone number?

No. Our eSIMs are data only, with no +86 number, no calls and no SMS. Keep your home SIM active in dual-SIM mode for bank codes, and use apps over data. Some Chinese services ask for a local number; a data-only eSIM cannot receive their codes.

Does the same eSIM work in Hong Kong and mainland China?

Not our China plans: they cover mainland China only. Hong Kong has its own operators, and it is covered by our Global plans, from $5.99, according to their declared coverage. The Global plans also cover mainland China. Check Hong Kong and China before you buy.

Can the Chinese network see what I do on a travel eSIM?

It sees your device identifier (IMEI) and your approximate location, as any visited network does. With home routing, your traffic content travels back to the home network before it reaches the internet, but an eSIM does not itself provide a VPN tunnel: websites and apps use their own encryption. A private checkout does not hide subscription identifiers, the device or its location from mobile networks.
