Can you buy a local SIM or eSIM in China without ID?

A passport and real-name registration are mandatory (MIIT Regulation No. 25 of 2013, amended in 2016). A local eSIM is sold only in operator shops, with an ID check, and only for compatible China-market iPhones.

Face scan at purchase under an MIIT rule applied from 1 December 2019. How it applies to foreign passports is not documented.

What is documented for a foreign travel eSIM in China?

Travel eSIMs usually work in roaming, and no rule found targets them (checked 2026-10-09). Apple states that eSIMs from non-China-mainland carriers cannot be installed while located in China mainland, so install before you enter.

Do Google and WhatsApp work on a travel eSIM in China?

Not tested on our plans yet, so we cannot tell you. It depends on where the eSIM routes traffic. eSIM sellers report that Google and WhatsApp are usually reachable when traffic exits outside mainland China, and some report Google still blocked on their own China plans. We have not published the routing of our China plans and make no prediction. Our page on Google and WhatsApp in China lists the sources. Local laws apply to how you use any line.

What should a visitor check before travelling to China?

Install the eSIM before you enter mainland China. Apple says eSIMs from non-China-mainland carriers cannot be installed while located in China mainland.

iPhones bought in mainland China support eSIM only on a few models: iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air. Other China-market iPhones have two nano-SIM slots and no eSIM (Apple).

Whether Google and WhatsApp work depends on where the eSIM routes traffic. For our plans, the exit country is not yet published and access is not tested.

A data eSIM has no +86 number, so Chinese apps that require a local number will not accept it.

What does an UnlistedSIM plan for China cost?

From $2.09. Review the allowance and validity before purchasing. Minimum balance top-up: $10; unused balance is non-refundable. No phone number is included.

What else is specific to China?

Can I install a travel eSIM after arriving in China?

Plan on no. Apple states that eSIMs from carriers outside mainland China cannot be installed while the iPhone is located in mainland China (support article 123879, published 9 September 2026). Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi, then switch the line on when you land. UnlistedSIM shows the QR code and activation code in your account as soon as the eSIM is ready.
